Waiting at a doctor’s office or at a hospital is quite possibly the most time consuming procedure that exists in the medical field as a patient. In a recent survey taken at a local waiting room, 83% of the patients were dissatisfied with the procedures and various stages of “downtime” they had to endure before speaking with their doctor. Sintomatico was made for this task and performs with the upmost attention to functionality and user experience. The three main components were made out of injection-molded plastic with aluminum reinforcements. With the high volume of patients being processed at a hospital, the materials had to help stop the spread of bacteria. All of the hardware for the CPU is guarded in the rear case with various vents for cooling. As the machine produces heat, the system is put on sleep mode, thus not creating excess heat into the waiting room. Several of these machines could be adapted together on a local P2P network at a local hospital emergency room or nursing home to allow for quick and efficient service. My main design goal was to reduce the “downtime” while waiting for the nurse to check your vitals before your consultation with the physician. As you approach your new digital nurse, one of the first striking features you notice is the multi-gesture touch screen. Whether you’re confined to a wheelchair or an elderly patient, SintÛmatico accommodates to your physical needs. Designed to comply with the ADA Act of 1990 all the components of the user interface are within eyelevel and reach of a patient with any handicap. Wheelchair patients have ramps that are automated allowing for easy access on and off the machine. Detecting a wheelchair onboard, it recognizes this and begins to swivel down the screen to accommodate to the patient’s height restrictions. To cross the language barrier, Sintomatico comes programmed with the 4 most common languages in the world: Chinese, Spanish, French and English, with options to expand depending on the region being dispatched to. As you step or wheel yourself on, this is where ingenuity meets simplicity. Recognizing a patient onboard, Sintomatico begins the process of checking your 5 main vitals; height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, and heart rate. It only takes about 7 minutes for the process to be completed after which it notifies the nurse on duty that you are ready to be seen by the doctor. A series of new technologies were compiled to allow for this process to happen, along with Asymtek laser height sensors and the new SphygmoCor Px Pulse Wave Analysis system, providing a user experience like no other. Sintomatico not only provides a service for the patient, but as well raises productivity for the doctor, as more patients equal more profit. With the wait time cut by all most 60%, Sintomatico has the ability to vend a hospitable service and put a smile back on your face while you wait for your appointment.

  Luis's favorite design tool:
My favorite design tool has to be a piece of paper and a pen. I always remember my favorite quote "the possession of anything begins in the mind" -Bruce Lee, when you have a blank piece of paper and a pen, you could literally put down everything thats spinning around your head, on a blank canvas and see what comes out of it.

  Luis's hobbies and activities:
Aside from drawing and reading, I enjoy keeping up with Formula One Racing and other sports. Traveling is always a good escape and a real inspirational tool as a designer.
What role does Luis believe product design plays in creating a better future?
From some of the first products out on the market to early automobiles, design has not only been a global trend, but it is a cultural marker. The evolution of design into the future, deals with the correlation a designer has with his or hers environment and the impact that you create in it.
  Hardware used for design:
Hewlett Packard, Apple
